The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este event is one of the most traditional and exclusive events for the automobile industry and was first held in 1929 as a show for introducing new vehicles in the automobile sector to the public. Voted by Forbes magazine in 2009 as the best hotel in Europe, the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este in Cernobbio makes the ambiance of this particular event purely classic and elegant, with Lake Como as the backdrop. Each year there is an underlying theme to the event, with last year’s theme being “Around the World in 80 Days,” where event attendees dressed as if they were part of the novel written by Jules Verne in the 19th century.
Appropriate to the historical theme of the event, the winner for the 2017 Coppa d’Oro was a 1935 Lurani Nibbio, built for its speed. This year’s event is held May 24-26th, 2018 with the theme being “Hollywood on the Lake.” The real highlight of the event is the parade of the cars and motorcycles that take place in front of the hotel, when all of the cars and motorcycles are presented by a host, who tells the history about every particular car to the audience and jury.
Villa d’Este itself was built in a renaissance style by Pellegrino Tibaldi and has some historical significance as well, as it was originally built for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio in 1570. In 1815, the hotel became the home of Caroline of Brunswick, the separated wife of King George IV of the United Kingdom.
The villa then became a hotel in 1873 and is also home to the annual Ambrosetti Forum, an international conference for politicians, financiers and business leaders around the globe. More recently, the hotel was the place where Alfred Hitchcock proposed to his wife and where George Clooney has a home nearby in Laglio.
