About Lima
Situated on Peru’s Pacific coast, on the south bank of the Rímac River, the capital city of Lima is the third-largest city in the Americas. The city was established on January 18, 1535, when Francisco Pizarro, the conquistador and leader of the Spanish conquest of Peru, designated the location of Plaza Mayor (Plaza de Armas of Lima) as the center of the city. A grid layout was used to map out the remainder of the city based on the plaza square. The water fountain has been the centerpiece of the plaza since September 8, 1651.
Construction of the Cathedral of Lima began in the plaza in 1535 and was completed in 1649, reflecting neoclassical, baroque and gothic architectural styles. Inside the church, you can view Pizarro’s tomb and tour a museum of religious art.
Other notable Lima attractions include the intriguing catacombs of the Monastery of San Francisco, Larco Museum’s collection of pre-Columbian art and the National Museum that houses thousands of artifacts from civilizations that have inhabited Peru.
