The town was founded long before Christ by the ancient Greeks and was named Burgas, the locals here were engaged in fishing and copper mining, but after the opening of the local port, it became the most important commercial port on the Black Sea.

Six miles from downtown Burgas is Burgas Airport (BOJ, LBBG). It is a public airport, the second largest in the country, which serves the seaside resorts of the southern coast of Bulgaria.
