Private Jet Airports in Chicago for Charter Flights

Seven airports around Chicago handle private jets. Each has its own FBO terminal for charter passengers, so you avoid the lines and waits of the commercial hubs. Which one is best depends on where in the metro area you are headed and the size of the aircraft.

1. Chicago Executive Airport (KPWK, PWK)

Chicago Executive Airport sits 18 miles north of downtown in Wheeling. It is the busiest business-aviation airport in the region, with three FBOs and modern hangars. The 5,001-foot main runway suits light, midsize and most super-midsize jets.

It is the natural choice for the North Shore and the northern suburbs. Corporate offices along the I-94 corridor and the Lake Forest estates are a short drive away.

2. Midway International Airport (KMDW, MDW)

Midway is 12 miles from the Loop. For a downtown meeting it is usually the quickest door-to-door option. Two FBOs, Atlantic Aviation and Signature Aviation, handle charter flights away from the airline terminal.

The 6,522-foot runway takes everything up to a heavy jet. Slots are tight at peak airline hours, so operators plan arrival times around them.

3. Chicago O’Hare International Airport (KORD, ORD)

O’Hare is one of the world’s busiest airports, and it also serves private jets. Signature Aviation runs the FBO, with a private lounge, concierge service and customs on arrival for international flights.

The runways handle any aircraft, including VIP airliners. The trade-off is airline traffic: taxi times are longer than at the smaller fields, so O’Hare is chosen for international arrivals and for the largest jets.

4. DuPage Airport (KDPA, DPA)

DuPage Airport is in West Chicago, 29 miles from downtown. It serves the western suburbs and the corporate campuses around Naperville and Oak Brook.

The airport-run DuPage Flight Center is the FBO. It has US Customs on the field, so international flights can clear here. The 7,571-foot runway takes heavy jets.

5. Aurora Municipal Airport (KARR, AUZ)

Aurora Municipal Airport is in Sugar Grove, about 50 miles west of downtown. It is the quiet option for the far western suburbs and the Fox Valley.

Two FBOs serve charter flights. The 6,501-foot runway handles light, midsize and super-midsize jets.

6. Waukegan National Airport (KUGN, UGN)

Waukegan National Airport is 40 miles north of downtown, close to the Wisconsin line. It serves Lake County, the North Shore and clients heading to Milwaukee’s southern suburbs.

A full-service FBO handles charter passengers. US Customs is available on the field for international arrivals. The 6,000-foot runway takes most business jets.

7. Gary/Chicago International (KGYY, GYY)

Gary/Chicago International Airport is in Gary, Indiana, 25 miles from downtown. It is the closest airport for the South Side and northwest Indiana, and a useful alternative when Midway is full.

Two FBOs serve private flights, with customs on the field. The 8,859-foot runway is the longest after O’Hare’s, so it handles any business jet and VIP airliners.
